Wheels Not Wings: Custom Camper Vans Built for Epic Road Trips

Summer is upon us, and this year that means road-trip season. Few things can make or break your trip quicker than the vehicle you choose to hit the road in. With that in mind, we have our eye on three luxury camper vans stocked with features that will make your next long-haul journey a truly luxurious experience.

Off Grid Adventure Van’s Classic Van

Based in Maryland, Off Grid Adventure Vans is a conversion van company that aims to produce a more environmentally sustainable vehicle. Introduced in 2018, their classic van starts at around $60,000 and comes with a Murphy bed and a dining and living room area in the back with benches and a removable table that seats six. There is also a fully functioning bathroom with a shower and an optional toilet (we think yes). To truly make it yours, you can custom add other amenities including storage cabinets, hardwood floors, a roof vent, wood-panel walls, solar panels for power, indoor shower, outdoor shower, and many other features.

Outside Van’s Power Station

In 2018, Oregon-based custom builder Outside Van created a one-of-a-kind 2016 4x4 Mercedes-Benz 170 3500 Sprinter, called the Power Station. Built to take your life on the road, the aptly named Power Station comes equipped with enough power to run the rooftop air conditioner for up to eight hours off-the-grid. Van dwellers can even use the outlets for mundane tasks like running a hair dryer without the fear of emptying the battery. There’s also a foam queen-size bed, a kitchen with bamboo cabinetry, microwave, an induction stove, a sink, stainless-steel refrigerator, and bamboo table for dining. Multiple overhead cabinets provide space for storing clothes and other necessities, while a gear garage below the bed comfortably fits a few bikes. The Power Station also boasts a full-size stainless-steel shower enclosure—or you can indulge in an outdoor shower via an exterior head-and-hose system. Thanks to all of the custom features, the Power Station doesn’t come cheap: The current asking price is $240,000.

Winnebago’s Revel

Founded in 1958, the iconic Iowa-based RV company Winnebago released an off-road adventure vehicle this year called the Revel. Using a Mercedes-Benz 4x4 Sprinter as the base, the Revel features all-terrain tires and a four-wheel-drive system. Inside, you’ll find a full kitchen equipped with an induction cooktop, a water-filtration system, and flip-up kitchen counter, as well as a combo air-conditioning/heating unit. The van can sleep two on a power-lift bed that—in its highest position—allows enough clearance to store bikes or whatever other gear you bring with you. At night, you can lower the bed with the push of a button. The living area features two bench seats, a pedestal table, and plenty of overhead storage, while the bathroom has a toilet, shower head, flip-down sink, and removable shelves. Want to get your hands on the Revel? It’ll cost you $174,799.
