Restless Spirits Episode 8: Vanessa Alexander
Since its inception, AETHER has possessed a major proclivity for design in all its forms — so much so, in fact, that we often describe ourselves as a design company that just happens to make clothing. As a result, we don’t just turn to adventurers, motorsport enthusiasts, or athletes for inspiration, and instead cast a wider net that includes looking to everyone from artisans and craftspeople to photographers and chefs to architects, and, the subject of our latest Restless Spirits profile; interior designers.
Based in Los Angeles, Vanessa Alexander has been something of a powerhouse in the interior design realm since founding Alexander Design roughly 15 years ago—though one could argue her entire life experience lead up to this career path.
In the world of design, there’s a lot of subjectivity, which can make it difficult to objectively measure success. Consequently, a major barometer and benchmark used by Alexander and her team is looking at whether or not a living space is holistic in nature, and just as importantly, if its design is informed by the clients’ vision and lifestyle.

So, for the latest installment in this series, AETHER heads down to Malibu to spend a day with Vanessa, sitting down with the renowned interior designer for an unfiltered discussion on her craft, and exploring one of her latest projects in the process.
To help convey her points and give us a more tangible sense of how her approach manifests in practice, Alexander invited us to tour one of her latest works. “Right now we’re in one of our recently completed projects called ‘Sea Ranch’ in Malibu, California,” says Alexander.
