Adventure Spotlight: | Under Canvas
A glamping tent at Under Canvas Zion.
Under Canvas, which launched in 2009, takes the “glamping” experience to the next level with eight locations around the country that all serve up an unplugged experience deep in the outdoors. Inspired by the African safari experience, Under Canvas resorts feature luxury tent accommodations, the most expensive of which have en-suite bathrooms and showers with hot water. Locations include outposts in Utah, Montana, Tennessee, South Dakota, and Arizona.
The experience is one of rustic elegance: Tents are outfitted with creature comforts including plush beds, leather furniture, and cozy décor— wooden decks offer a place to take in the epic surroundings. Rechargeable lanterns provide light after the sun sets, and a wood-burning stove is the heat source on cold nights (guests build their own fires, which adds to the charm and authenticity of the experience). Daily housekeeping rounds out the amenities that make Under Canvas feel more like staying in a hotel than roughing it.
The Under Canvas locations—most of which are primely located near national parks—offer a variety of activities that take advantage of their proximity to the best nature has to offer, from mountain biking, horseback riding, and white- water rafting to hiking and rock climbing. Days at the glamping getaway are often capped off by nights at the communal campfire roasting s’mores.
