Art Spotlight: Doug Aitken's Mirage Gstaad
If you made it to the inaugural Desert X in the Coachella Valley in 2017, you likely saw LA-based artist Doug Aitken’s Mirage installation, an entirely mirrored ranch-style home that reflected the Joshua Tree desert landscape it was set in. The much-visited and Instagrammed structure had a dramatic change of scenery and reflection when it traveled from the desert to Downtown Detroit, where it resided until February of this year.
Mirage has now found a home in Europe, where it will remain for the next two years. Currently located in Videmanette in Gstaad, Switzerland, the mirror-covered structure seamlessly disappears into its snowy forest surroundings, while reflecting the rugged terrain of the Swiss Alps. Visitors can enter the building to find an interior also covered in mirrors, with the walls and ceiling reflecting light off each other, creating a kaleidoscopic effect. Here, some photos of the Mirage Gstaad.
